Brain Book: Unit1
UNIT 2 - NEWS YOU CAN USE
How can you use this information in your life?
When you are afraid of something, your brain sets off the fight-or-flight response- the release of chemicals into your bloodstream that make your heart beat fast, breathing speed up, and your skin sweat.
This will feel like a PANIC ATTACK!
What can you do?
Use SELF-TALK to refocus your thinking. Cross out the negative thoughts you have and replace them with positive ones. For example, instead of "I'll probably fail!" say, "I am going to figure this out!"
Focus on STRATEGY instead of what might go wrong. Ask yourself: What is the problem? How will I handle it? What tools do I have?
Use SQUARE BREATHING to fight off a panic attack. Breathe in slowly to a count of five. Hold for five counts. Breathe out slowly to a count of five. Wait to a count of five. Begin again. Do this 5-10 times and you will calm yourself down.
