Brain Book: Unit4
UNIT 4 - WHERE ARE MEMORIES KEPT?
What part of the brain forms and holds your memories?
Many parts of your brain are involved in memory:
Sensory memories are held for a second or less in areas of the brain that take in information from that sense. For example, information from your eyes goes to the back of your brain (the occipital lobe), and sounds go to your temporal lobes, right behind your ears.
Working memory probably is held mostly in the prefrontal cortex, behind your forehead. When these memories are translated into long-term memories, in a process called encoding, an area of the brain called the hippocampus plays an important role. This structure is in the middle of your brain and is shaped like a seahorse.
Long-term memories are stored throughout the entire brain, in the network of connections that you make when you learn.
